Maintenance Tip: Wax The Lights

Okay, we admit it's a little detail, but in winter’s gloom and short days, every last lumen you can squeeze out of your headlamps is going to improve your safety.

Here's an easy two-minute drill: Make sure the headlamps are clean of dirt, rub car wax (any type will do) on the lamps, let it dry and buff it off. Repeat. For bonus points, do the taillights.

The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an "icicle" coat when road slush refreezes on your car -- and will make it easier to remove it if it does.

2013 Dodge Charger AWD offers Sport package, paddle shifters

Dodge
Dodge will offer a new Sport package for the all-wheel-drive 2013 Charger sedan. It will be available on all trims except the SRT8, costing $1,395 on the SXT and SXT Plus models and $1,195 on R/T and R/T Plus versions.

The Sport package includes a gloss-black grille and surround, 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, all-season performance tires, body-color spoiler and sport seats. For the first time, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are offered, as is a sport calibration mode for the transmission.

The Charger Sport package also adds a full sound system with Beats Audio technology. That comes with a 12-channel amplifier, three 3.5-inch speakers in the instrument panel, two in the rear doors, two 6-by-9-inch speakers in the front doors and two in the rear parcel shelf. Those are joined by an 8-inch subwoofer in the trunk.

The Pentastar V6 is upgraded for 2013. It now makes 300 hp, a boost of 8 hp, with the addition of a sport-tuned exhaust and cold-air induction system. Fuel economy is still rated at 18 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. Of course, the Hemi is still an option.

Both V6 and V8 all-wheel-drive models get Chrysler’s active transfer case and front-axle disconnect system that helps the sedan switch seamlessly between rear- and all-wheel drive.

The 2013 Charger is built at the Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant. The SXT-base Charger AWD Sport will cost $33,685 while the R/T Plus trim with the Sport package will come in at $36,685 including $995 in destination charges.

Motor Trend names the new Ram 1500 the magazine’s “2013 Truck of the Year®”

Ram
EXCITING RAM NEWS!
This morning, in a presentation to thousands of proud Chrysler employees at Chrysler Headquarters, the editors of Motor Trend named the new Ram 1500 the magazine’s “2013 Truck of the Year®.”“The new Ram 1500 makes a powerful statement about our company and the Ram Truck Brand,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico. To be named Motor Trend’s 2013 Truck of the Year is an amazing honor; truly one of the most prestigious awards an automaker can achieve. It reaffirms the fact that Ram has the best truck on the road today. Bar none.”
Motor Trend editors praised the new 2013 Ram 1500 for its air suspension, choice of engines, variety of trim levels and towing capability.
“We had a small but solid field of contenders for Motor Trend's Truck of the Year," said Edward Loh, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend. "But in the end, the choice was clear: Ram 1500 not only withstood our rigorous testing, it impressed at every step along the way. Our judges were won over by the performance of Ram 1500’s broad array of standard and optional equipment. It’s a truck that can be tailored to meet most anyone’s needs. For these reasons and more, we're excited to name the Ram 1500 the Motor Trend 2013 Truck of the Year.”

2013 Ram 1500: Decisive Magazine’s “Urban Truck of the Year”

Ram
The results are in, and once again they favor Ram.

After spending several months determining the most stylish, practical, and attainable new vehicles for 2013, some of the most respected auto reviewers in the country have named the new 2013 Ram 1500 Decisive Magazine’s “Urban Truck of the Year.”

The Urban Wheel Awards judging panel drove dozens of cars and trucks during the evaluation process and ultimately based its final choices on several key factors, many of which are epitomized in the latest-model Ram Truck. According to Randy Payton, founder of the annual Urban Wheel Awards, “The Ram 1500 is as quiet as a luxury car and yet is also extraordinarily capable as a truck. Rugged, and yet smooth enough for a night on the town, the Ram 1500 really raises the bar on what a pickup truck should be.”

Like anyone, we appreciate kind words and awards. For us, they serve as a signpost, a welcome indicator that though we’re not finished, we’re well on our way to reaching our goal—that is, providing the ultimate driving experience to current and potential Ram Truck owners.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Check your tire pressure

Tires
Here are two good reasons to get down there with the gauge and unscrew the valve caps as the weather cools:

1) Tires lose a pound of pressure for every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) An underinflated tire won't "bite" through snow down to the pavement as well as one at pressure. It's similar to hydroplaning on water -- and just as dangerous. You may have heard the guidance to let air out of your tires for sand or snow to get more contact surface area. That only applies only if the surface is bottomlessly soft, like a beach or foot-deep, unplowed snow -- not the mix of cleared road, ice and packed snow most of us encounter in daily driving.

Don't forget to put the valve caps back on (or, buy new ones) when you're done. Letting in moisture, which then freezes, could let the valve core leak out air.

Jeep launch 10th Anniversary Edition Wrangler Rubicon

Jeep
Chrysler announced today the spring 2013 launch of a special Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 equipped 10th Anniversary Edition Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Pimped out with a stunning red leather interior and sporting a set of BF Goodrich KM2 265/70R17 off-road tires on satin black rims the special edition Jeep Wrangler Rubicon – which will be available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited - sets a new standard for cool custom “Toad” vehicles from the world renowned 4x4 manufacturer.

The Moparized Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition “is a tribute to 10 years of Wrangler Rubicon history, and to the Jeep brand's most passionate enthusiasts," said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC.

A decade ago Jeep dramatically enhanced the off-road capability of their product range with the introduction of the 2003 model year Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Named for the grueling 22-mile-long off-road trail in California’s Sierra Nevada the Jeep Rubicon is unquestionably the most extreme Wrangler ever produced and the 10th anniversary edition builds on this impressive reputation. Available with either a standard six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission mated to a 285 horsepower V-6 engine the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon employs a part-time four-wheel-drive system with electronic-locking front and rear Dana 44 axles that receive power through a Rock-Trac transfer case.

The Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition comes standard with a Premium Sunrider soft top and is available with a black three-piece Freedom hard top or body-color hard top. Available exterior colors for the Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition are Billet Silver, White and 10th Anniversary Edition-exclusive Anvil.

Drive On: Chrysler will make macho minivan

Ch
Chrysler is making another valiant attempt to make minivans feel cutting-edge, or at least less frumpy.

This time, it's giving its Town and Country minivan touches such as a black-chrome grille, blacked-out headlight bezels and 17-inch wheels with black inserts. Are we sensing a theme here?

The new man-van will be called the Town and Country S, the same S designation as the 200 and 300 sedans receive when they are given the same high-attitude treatment.

Minivans are hugely practical both for families and surfer dudes, and while big and heavy, get a little better gas mileage -- 17 miles a gallon in the city, 25 on the highway for the Town and Country -- than most three-row SUVs. But they suffer from a mom- and dad-jeans image that they just can't shake.

When Ralph Gilles ran Dodge before he took over Chrysler's performance division, he tried a more macho Grand Caravan minivan. But the idea never really took off.

The Town and Country S will carry the noir theme inside, where it will have black leather seats with an "S" logo embroidered into them. Glossy black appliques, a black headliner and a black leather-wrapped steering wheel will complete the look.

Unique Dodge Dart Escorts Belvidere Assembly Plant Workers to Food Pantry

Dart
Employees at Chrysler Group's Belvidere Assembly Plant had a special escort today on their way to the Belvidere/Boone County Food Pantry.

Leading their procession of Chrysler Group vehicles laden with food for Thanksgiving Day dinners was the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart compact car. But this Belvidere-built Dart looked remarkably like a police car, complete with overhead light bar and Belvidere Police Department graphics on the sides.

The police department already patrols the community in a Dodge Charger Pursuit, America's high-performance police vehicle, but Chrysler Group does not offer a Dodge Dart police car. So Belvidere Police Chief Jan Noble approached Chrysler Group with an idea - provide the Belvidere Police Department with a police vehicle made in the Belvidere Assembly Plant.

"The Belvidere Police Department wanted to drive what's built in their town by their own citizens," said Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development & Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. "This was a terrific opportunity to support the Belvidere police and continue to foster our longtime partnership with this city and region."

The result is a unique built-in-Belvidere Dodge Dart police vehicle that the city will use for non-patrol tasks and ceremonial purposes. Grady notes that 20 percent of law enforcement fleet vehicles typically are non-patrol vehicles used by detectives, police administrators, and other police department personnel.

The Belvidere Police Department will provide Chrysler Group with feedback on the uses for this test vehicle. The Company will use that feedback to determine whether a non-patrol Dodge Dart police vehicle could be marketed to other law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

In its first ceremonial function, the Dart was used today to escort the food drive procession from the Belvidere Assembly Plant to the local county pantry in Capron, Ill.

With Thanksgiving approaching, Chrysler Group employees across the Midwest have been taking time out from building cars and trucks to make sure their neighbors have the means to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner. Today, everything from canned fruit and vegetables to cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling and stuffing mix was packed up and loaded into Chrysler Group vehicles for delivery to the food pantry.

The annual Chrysler Group Thanksgiving Food Drive taking place today in partnership with the UAW, is part of the Company's long-standing tradition of giving back to its local communities and will help local food pantries restock their shelves in time for Thanksgiving. To complete the menu, The Chrysler Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Chrysler Group, has purchased more than 1,500 frozen turkeys, which will also be distributed by the food pantries.

2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition Gives To Military Charities

Jeep
Chrysler has debuted a new, special edition of its Jeep Patriot SUV: the 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom edition.

The announcement came yesterday, while many Americans were observing Veterans Day. The timing isn't coincidental: like the Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition, the Patriot Freedom is billed as "a tribute to the brave men and women that have served", according to Mike Manley, Jeep's president and CEO.

That's not just talk: Jeep is donating $250 from the sale of each Patriot Freedom to a range of military charities. The vehicle is also eligible for Chrysler's Military Bonus Consumer Cash program, which offers a $500 cash allowance to "active military, active military reserve, retired military (honorable discharge and 20 years of service required), and retired military reserve (honorable discharge and 20 years of service required). Honorably discharged veterans are eligible within 6 months of discharge date."

On the exterior, the first difference you're likely to notice between the Freedom edition and the regular Jeep Patriot is a military-inspired star right in the center of the hood, as well as on the rear quarter panel. The vehicle comes with three patriotic paint options: Deep Cherry Red (seen above), Bright White, and True Blue. The 17" aluminum wheels are painted in Mineral Gray, and on the front doors, you'll find a badge labeled "Oscar Mike", which is military lingo for "on the move".

Inside, you'll find features like those on the 2013 Jeep Patriot Latitude, on which the Patriot Freedom is based -- features like a sunroof and all-season floor mats. However, there are a few differences, including the dark gray cloth interior, which comes with "silver accent stitching and a black fabric 'star' logo patch on the front seats".

With two- and four-wheel drive configurations, the 2013 Jeep Patriot Freedom Edition starts at $21,445, plus a $995 destination charge. It's currently available at Jeep dealers nationwide.

Chrysler Sends Trucks to Pick Up After Storm

In the aftermath of last week's devastating northeastern storm, Chrysler Group LLC announced it is donating 20 Ram trucks and $100,000 to the American Red Cross.

Chrysler -- which has been at the center of a media storm of its own recently after presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused the company of planning to relocate its Jeep manufacturing facilities to China -- made the announcement from its Auburn Hills, Mich., headquarters.

"Our hearts go out to those impacted by Superstorm Sandy," Fred Diaz stated in a press release.

The Ram Truck president and CEO of the Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group LLC said, "We are inspired by their unwavering spirit in this time of adversity, and Ram is proud to support relief and recovery efforts by providing the Red Cross with a team of Ram trucks to support this critical mission."

In addition to the controversy surrounding the Romney ad and President Obama's support of the previous administration's "bail-out" of the automobile giant, billionaire commercial real estate developer Donald Trump last week took shots at the company for allegedly capitalizing on the recent controversy to gain media attention.

Mr. Trump's criticism of the automobile company prompted Chrysler executive Ralph Gilles to immediately take to Twitter and defend the company, now owned by Italian carmaker Fiat Group.

As reported on HispanicBusiness.com, Gilles tweeted that Donald Trump was contributing to the spread of false rumors about the company, rumors that could have a devastating effect on Chrysler workers by creating undue anxiety over the status of their jobs.

It's a sign of the times and a remarkable reflection of the quick response afforded by social media that, a) false rumors can be spread about a company that can potentially severely damage its image; b) corporate executives have adapted to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to promote -- and defend -- their brands; and c) companies are using the power of charitable giving to help repair the damage of negative media reporting.

The automaker's press release announcing the donations to storm disaster relief efforts states, "Chrysler Group and its brands have a long history of supporting its communities in their time of need."

The release goes on to remind the press that the Ram Truck brand and The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) announced a partnership with the First Response Team of America, a nonprofit disaster relief organization.

"The First Response Team arrived ahead of Sandy to assist local responders with rescues and to provide help with cleanup efforts," the Chrysler press release attests.

Most commentators and pundits would undoubtedly agree that "non-profit" seems to be the operative word among today's charitable givers and press-coverage seekers, including Mr. Trump, who has announced his fair share of "gifts" to various causes over the years.

For its part, the American Red Cross expressed gratitude to Chrysler for the donations of Ram Trucks (no longer referred to as Dodge) and the $100,000 cash contribution.

"The impact of Superstorm Sandy was widespread and the road to recovery will be long for many families," said Neal Litvack, chief development officer at the American Red Cross. "Through the generosity of its partners such as Ram and Chrysler Group, the American Red Cross is responding with shelter, food and emotional support, helping families and communities with their most critical needs."

Monday Maintenance Tip: 9 Ways to Ruin Your Paint Without Knowing It

Keeping your car looking good isn’t just a matter of enhancing its resale value, although that’s important too, it’s also your car’s only line of defense between the sheet metal and the elements. You already know parking lot dings, gravel roads or an angry ex can ruin your car’s paint in the blink of an eye, but a lot of things out there can do just as much, if not more, harm to the exterior of your car.

We contacted Mothers for advice on how to deal with common paint-damaging situations. While their specific advice is below, time and time again, they recommended keeping a good coat of wax on your car. Not only does it keep it looking pretty, it helps prevent most paint damage, or at the very least, buys you some time to get your car professionally washed. Mothers also recommended keeping a bottle of quick-detail spray and a microfiber cloth in your trunk. As you’ll see, a lot of these common problems can be prevented with a quick wipe of this solution.

The Source: Wildfires

The Problem: When wet, ash forms an alkali that can ruin your car’s finish.
The Solution: Keep your car covered, use a car duster for white ash, wash thoroughly if it’s soot.

These days it seems like every state is burdened with wildfires. The ash gets everywhere, and your car’s finish is no exception. While your instinct may be to hit the windshield washers, or just hose down the whole car, water mixed with ash can create powerful alkalis, which will ruin your paint. White ash can be removed with a car duster, or just by driving away and letting it blow off. Black ash can scratch your paint, even when you use a duster, so you’ll need to wash it off using a car wash solution, and dry thoroughly. Once the fires are out, get your car professionally washed, and put on a new coat of wax.

The Source: Tree sap

The Problem: Ancient peoples used tree sap as glue for a good reason.
The Solution: Bug and tar remover, mineral spirits, clay bar treatment

Just wiping sap off when it’s still gooey only smears it around a larger area. Instead, get a bottle of bug and tar remover from your local car parts store, and use it as directed. If the sap dries, mineral spirits can dissolve it, and remaining residue will come off with a clay bar treatment. Just be sure to wax the car after you’re done.

The Source: The gas pump

The Problem: Spilled gasoline
The Solution: Don’t top off, and clean up accidental drips

Times are tough, but “topping off” your gas tank and accidentally letting it overflow is a surefire way to damage your car’s paint. If left alone, gasoline will leave a stain on your car’s finish that’s nearly impossible to get off. If you do happen to spill gas by accident, the best solution is to grab a bottle of instant detailer and a good, clean microfiber cloth and clean up the gasoline before it does any harm.

The Source: Fingertips and mischief

The Problem: Writing or rubbing on dirty paint causes permanent marks.
The Solution: Keep your car clean.

We’ve all seen “wash me” written on a car’s finish, but the well-intentioned tagger actually just made things worse. Dirt acts like sandpaper when it’s dragged across paint, and it can make the marks last long after the dirt is gone.

Get yourself a long-handled duster and wipe down your car every day to prevent accidental sanding. If it’s too late, most small scratches come out with a polish or scratch remover. Just always be sure to clean the car well before waxing or polishing.

The Source: Your morning coffee

The Problem: Coffee and sodas contain acids that can etch your clearcoat.
The Solution: Wash it off immediately

Driving off with your coffee cup or soda bottle on your roof isn’t just a day-ruiner, it can ruin your paint. Many beverages are acidic, and since any acid can hurt your car’s finish, you’ll want to get it washed off as soon as you can. Letting it sit will only give it more time to do damage, and letting it dry will only make it harder to get off later. If it’s a soda, or if you take a lot of sugar in your coffee, then you’re going to be dealing with a sticky residue in addition to corrosive chemicals. If you can’t hit a car wash, then break out your bottle of quick detailer and your microfiber cloth and wipe it up.

The Source: Dirt on your car-wash tools

The Problem: Unseen dirt can scratch
The Solution: Keep an extra mitt handy.

Washing your own car can be fun, but a common mistake can cause more damage than you think: dropping your sponge. Even the finest, most expensive microfiber wash mitt on the market can be ruined if it touches the ground. The bits of grit and sand it inevitably picks up can’t be entirely washed off, and you’ll have swirl marks and other scratches before you know it. The solution is to never drop anything. But if you’re like us, it’d be best to keep a spare washing mitt or two on hand to avoid the resulting expenses from car detailing or repainting.

The Source: Automatic sprinklers

The Problem: Water leaves hard-to-remove spots on your paint.
The Solution: Stay away from sprinklers whenever possible

That primo parking spot right next to the planter may look good, but if it has automatic sprinklers, you could be in for trouble. You wouldn’t think that plain water would be such a problem, but the minerals left behind bond to your car’s paint, making them very difficult to remove. Your best bet is to avoid parking where sprinklers can do their damage, but that’s not always possible. If you do get water spots, it’s best to take it to a professional detailer.

The Source: Avian digestion

The Problem: Bird poop is acidic
The Solution: Wash it off immediately

Bird poop isn’t just unsightly. It’s also acidic. Just look at the number of ruined marble statues in pigeon-infested cities and you’ll see what we mean. Not only that, but birds eat seeds and bits of gravel that can scratch your paint.

The solution is to wash bird droppings off as soon as you see them. Use a bottle of quick detail and a soft microfiber cloth to wipe it up. Be sure to use a lifting action, since you don’t want to grind any grit onto your paint.

The Source: Bugs

9999999999999999999

The Problem: Bug guts are acidic.

The Solution: Get to the car wash

You’re heading home from a road trip when suddenly the eighth plague of Egypt strikes, with thousands of bugs splattering your windshield. But just cleaning the windshield isn’t enough. Bugs are surprisingly acidic, and if you do hit a swarm, don’t let the bugs get the last laugh as their remains slowly etch your paint. Wash your car as soon as you can with a good car wash solution, and for the more stubborn guts, use a bug and tar remover.

Mopar goes off-road with Jeep Sand Trooper at SEMA

Jeep
The Jeep Wrangler Sand Trooper was one of the most eye-catching displays at the SEMA show. Wearing 42-inch swamp-ready tires and using Hemi V8 power, the Jeep presided prominently over the Mopar stand in Las Vegas.

But the Sand Trooper also symbolized the launch of Mopar's new off-road division: a team of hard-core Jeep enthusiasts who work "night and day" in the words of Mopar boss Pietro Gorlier.

One of those, Jeep designer Mark Allen, is a noted off-roader, which was exhibited in the Sand Trooper. Allen said the Jeep also received LED lights, a CB radio (yes, people still use those on the trails), lockable storage, custom skid plates and extra vents to help the 375-hp V8 engine breathe. Notably, there is five extra inches of ground clearance.

Mopar has always had a group of off-roaders, but the division was formally recognized Tuesday at SEMA. There are about 15 dedicated engineers/product people working on the off-roading custom parts at Mopar headquarters in Center Line, Mich., developing specific parts. The Wrangler, for example has 300 Mopar accessories.

Gorlier said the goal of the off-road unit is to cater to serious off-roaders: "Really to come out for what the hard-core enthusiasts are looking for," he said.

Top 7 Features of the 2013 Jeep® Wrangler Moab

We introduced the new 2013 Jeep® Wrangler Moab special edition a few weeks ago and, well, we can’t get over how capable and cool it is. So in honor of this special vehicle, we decided to choose seven of our favorite features.

1. A standard Trac-Lok anti-spin rear differential with an available electronic rear locking differential. To live up to its namesake, the Wrangler Moab has a standard Trac-Lok anti-spin rear differential to keep the wheels moving on that rocky red terrain – or wherever you take it. The available electronic rear locking differential gives the Wrangler Moab even better control whether traveling on- or off-road.

2. 245/75R17 Goodyear® SilentArmor® off-road tires with Kevlar™ reinforcement. Silent Armor + Kevlar = rugged toughness and a smooth ride.

3. 17-inch Rubicon alloy wheels painted gloss black. These wheels mean business. Crawling in these black alloy wheels gives the Wrangler Moab that mean edge out on the trails.

4. “Moab” embossed instrument panel grab handle. Our designers pay the same attention to detail that you might need for crawling a huge rock. The “Moab” embossed instrument panel is just one of several “Moab” references in and out of the vehicle.

5. Premium leather seating with black stitching. The Wrangler Moab is incredibly detailed, and the black stitching (in either the black or premium saddle leather seats) really exemplifies that.

6. A unique Mopar® dome hood. Its aggressive style matches the ruggedness of the Wrangler Moab.

7. Winch-capable steel bumpers and premium rock rails. This thing is built to do some serious off-roading, so it comes stock with features like the winch-capable steel bumpers and premium rock rails that give it the capability of a modified vehicle.

2012 Chrysler 300C Review

Is the era of the big American sedan over? Not if the 2012 Chrysler 300 has anything to do with it. Ford finally cancelled the Panther cars recently and left the unibody, front-wheel drive Taurus in its wake – the same has happened at Chevrolet with the Impala. Chrysler stands alone with its full-size, rear-wheel drive sedan. The 300 has a formula that resonates with a lot of people.

In about 2004/2005, among the American automakers it was the Chrysler Group (then under the ownership of Daimler) that had serious momentum. That was primarily do to a due of hit products: the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. The brash, rear-wheel drive 300 sedan in particular captured America’s attention, and it sailed over the six-figure sales mark. Sales petered after a while, as it lost its hit product. That left Chrysler free to focus on fixing what needed to be improved.

At the time of its introduction many noticed elements of the car that needed fixing: the interior’s design and quality, for instance, were substandard. Fast forward to today and Chrysler is back on the upswing, after a bankruptcy process that resulted in a partnership with Fiat. The 300 is perhaps the best example of what the company is capable of.

When looking at the 2012 300, you can’t help but get the impression that it is from a different era – and we say that in the most positive light, as the 300 is thoroughly modern in every aspect. The type of luxury it gives off is a feeling of optimistic, flamboyant Americana. Art Deco comes to mind – the stunning shade of brown and two-tone combination of tester’s interior played a big part in that.

When images of the new 300 first surfaced a while back, reaction on the internet wasn’t enthusiastic to say the least. That’s because 300 wasn’t considered a revolutionary change. Many thought that some of the swagger of the previous car was taken out. However, photos didn’t (and don’t) do this car justice. Leave it to skilled designers to know what we want before we want it. In person and on the road the 300 has an incredible presence. We’ll admit to never being huge fans of the previous 300, inside or out. Its main redeeming quality (to us) was the fact that it was driven by the rear wheels. The previous generation 300 looks downright crude and unsophisticated in comparison to the new model. It’s amazing what a reworking of a sound overall shape can do. From the day we saw the new 300 in person it made an impression.

Another thing that doesn’t quite come across in pictures is just how big the 300 is. It is a large car, with a heft that you can feel from behind the wheel. Space is abundant – look behind you and there is ample room for rear seat passengers, look ahead and the long hood stretches out before you. Our tester was equipped with an array of sensors that made parking a snap.

On the road, the 300′s suspension is properly tuned for its mission – comfortable, quiet cruising. There is some body roll at speed but things are pretty tight and well controlled. It’s a road trip vehicle we’d pick in a heartbeat, and rear seat passengers would concur. The length of the car enables a gentle rake of the rear seatback – a detail you don’t notice as much until get in a smaller car where space is a luxury.

The centerpiece of the 300 lineup (for most anyway) is the 300C with a 363 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. To our ears, there is no doubt what is under the hood. Step on the accelerator and the 300 shoots forward with a roar, reaching 60 mph in under seconds. Loaded up with every option in the book, our tester rang in at about $47,000.

The current 300 has moved up to a whole new level versus the previous car. It is playing in a luxury arena, and the price tag is there to match. Chrysler has responded to the sales data it sees, determining that the mix is skewing toward loaded models. High-end Executive Edition models and other special edition trims have been trotted out to take advantage of this. For years Chrysler has tried to pitch the idea that it is a luxury brand, and it has largely fallen on deaf ears.

With the 300 at least, the claim can be taken seriously. The fact that there are still decidedly mainstream models in the stable though, such as the 200, means that there is a lot of work left to do. To move forward as a brand, Chrysler has to figure out exactly what it wants to be. We’ll leave that to the brand experts to figure out though. The bottom line is this: if Chrysler’s upcoming models (next-generation 200 we’re looking at you) are anything up to the standard set by the 300, we’re looking forward to the brand’s future.

Dodge Dart named “safest reissue” car by IIHS

Dart
The Dodge Darts of old were sturdy, dependable, and good-looking, and Americans bought enough of them to make the badge a minor legend until the last one rolled off the assembly line in 1976.

But like almost every car of that era, they had no seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, ABS brakes or stability systems, though that doesn’t mean the company completely ignored safety. On the 1960-62 Darts, for instance, you could purchase optional "Child Guard" vacuum-powered door locks that operated from an instrument panel switch. But mostly, if you smacked up a Dart, it didn’t turn out well for you or your passengers.

That’s all changed with the introduction of the new Dart, which recently scored maximum possible ratings in every IIHS Top Safety Pick test. It’s got more than 60 available safety and security features, including 10 standard-equipment air bags. The first product born of Chrysler Group LLC’s alliance with Fiat S.p.A. recorded the maximum possible rating in each of the four crash tests used by the IIHS to evaluate occupant protection, the primary attribute of a Top Safety Pick. The 2013 Dart achieved a score of “good” in tests that simulate rollover, rear, side and moderate-overlap frontal impacts.

The IIHS rating scale comprises grades of good, acceptable, marginal and poor, and the Top Safety Pick is the highest safety honor bestowed by the IIHS. “Winners afford buyers the best overall protection in four of the most common kinds of crashes, and help them avoid crashes altogether with electronic stability control,” says IIHS President Adrian Lund. The Dart’s safety story starts with a solid structure: high-strength-steel comprises 68 percent of the car’s body, one of the highest ratios in the industry. Ten standard-equipment, advanced-design air bags further improve occupant protection. Every Dodge Dart comes equipped with:

• Dual-stage, adaptive, venting air bags for the driver and front-seat passenger,
• Front-seat-mounted pelvic and thorax air bags for driver and passenger,
• Two rear-seat-mounted pelvic air bags,
• Knee air bags for driver and front-seat passenger,
• Two curtain air bags designed to protect front and rear passengers on both sides of the car

Equally important are Dart technologies that deliver accident-avoidance capability, such as Electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, traction control, standard four-wheel, four-channel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection and more.

DIY car maintenance moves for fall: Check and top off fluids

"Many electrical issues and ignition problems stem from loose or corroded battery connections," says Travers. "If you notice corrosion on the posts or cable connectors, use an appropriate brush ($4 per brush.) This is a very inexpensive, yet handy tool that you can get at any auto parts store. And clean both (posts) completely, and then reconnect everything snuggly and securely."

As part of regular car maintenance, and for safety, make sure all of the car's lights are working; it's important for you to see, as well as be seen, during autumn's longer and darker nights, adds Molla. "Replacement bulbs will typically cost a dollar or two, with the exception of headlight bulbs, of course. They're considerably more expensive, but you can replace them all quite easily on your own without tools and save yourself a hefty labor charge in the process."

Headlight bulbs range in price from $14 to $27 for a single bulb to $25 to $50 for a dual pack

Chrysler teases a handful of their 2012 SEMA Show vehicles

The Chrysler Group routinely has one of the largest and most engaging displays at the SEMA Show each year and with under a month left until the huge automotive convention begins at the Las Vegas Convention Center – the folks from the Mopar division have offered up a very brief glimpse at five of the vehicles that will be in the massive Mopar display.

We know that Chrysler plans to have more than 20 vehicles in their large display that will likely be equipped and surrounded by an array of high performance goodies (and probably some race vehicles) from the Chrysler Group. This being the 75th anniversary of Mopar leads me to expect that this could be an especially exciting year for the Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, SRT and Fiat brands heading into the huge show that focuses on high performance and customization.

“At Mopar, we always look forward to the SEMA season,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The show is an opportunity for us to inspire owners to customize their vehicles, and it’s the perfect place to showcase our vast portfolio of quality-tested performance parts and accessories.”

The small collection of tightly cropped artists’ renderings of the first five vehicles headed to the 2012 SEMA Mopar include a Fiat 500, a Jeep Wrangler, a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T, a Ram 1500 pickup and a 2013 Dodge Dart that features enough physical changes that it is tough to guess what trimline this might be. Chrysler didn’t offer any information on these sketches but we can make some assumptions of what we might expect at the 2012 SEMA Show.

The Fiat 500 shown has a unique hood with louvers along with some brushed silver trim on both sides of the Fiat nose badge. The fact that this model wears the normal “Fiat” logo tells us that it isn’t a high performance Abarth model but with the recent debut of the Fiat 500 Turbo – I would bet that this is a new Turbo model with some unique dress-up items and possibly more performance from the Mopar catalog.

Next is a 2013 Dodge Charger with a unique hood featuring a front mounted hood scoop but the Dodge badging in the grille suggests that this is more likely a Charger R/T than a high performance SRT8 model. It also looks like it is packing some massive wheels and a firey paint job. This model will likely be used to show off a bunch of Mopar goodies for the top selling 5.7L Hemi-powered Charger sedan.

Next up is a 2013 Jeep Wrangler featuring a Warn winch, and elaborate front grille guard/bumper, some massive off roading tires and a stance that would suggest that this vehicle is equipped with a lift kit. Considering the popularity of the Mopar off-road goodies, I would expect that this show vehicle with take a production Wrangler and turn it into a super-mudder…or something of the sort.

The 2013 Dodge Dart is sure to be a popular model both inside and outside of the Mopar display at the 2012 SEMA Show and the white, black and red Dart shown in the gallery on the right and in the large image at the top of the page is likely just a Dart Turbo powered by the 1.4L Fiat engine with a ton of Mopar items to make it even sportier. Things like the lower front fascia “chin” spoiler and the carbon fiber hood are items that Mopar has shown off on other show models like the Dart GTS 210 Tribute so we can expect that this model will show off production-ready accessories that are available from the Mopar Performance catalog. Hopefully this Dart will also feature some go-fast goodies that are also available from Mopar.

Last and certainly not least is the interesting picture of what appears to be a 2013 Ram 1500 pickup sporting a black paint job and a blue driver’s stripe. While this picture technically shows less than the other drawings, with a power bulge hood that is already available to Ram 1500 owners, this picture could be of a truck that is more than just another SEMA show vehicle. For the last three years, the Mopar division has offered their own customized vehicles based on production Chrysler Group models beginning with the Dodge Challenger in 2010, the Dodge Charger in 2011 and the Chrysler 300C in 2012. That has long been speculation (since before the 2012 Moparized Chrysler 300C was introduced) that Mopar would feature a Ram 1500 as the “Mopar vehicle”. This picture and the show vehicle that goes with it could be offering us a look at the truck that could become the “Mopar 13” as it wears the same black and blue paint scheme, dark wheels and dark headlights that we see on all of the Mopar vehicles from the past three years. That is only speculation and the truck in question could simply be another run of the mill 1-off vehicle that will never be any more than that…or 2012 SEMA show-goers could be the first people to see the Mopar 13 based on the revised 2013 Ram 1500.

Check out the gallery on the right for a closer look at all five of the 2012 SEMA Show Chrysler vehicles introduced thus far and stay tuned to TorqueNews.com for all of your SEMA previews along with first hand coverage of the massive Vegas automotive convention.

Quick Drive: 2013 Ram 1500 Hemi 8A and Dodge Dart Six-Speed Dual-Clutch, Manual

Chrysler recently held a ride-and-drive event near our El Segundo headquarters, and allowed us to sample some of its newest wares. Present were arguably the three biggest vehicle launches for the Pentastar this year: the 2013 Ram 1500, the 2013 Dodge Dart, and the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth — and I got to take each of them for a spin.

The first vehicle I hopped into was the new 2013 Ram 1500 4×2 with the new 305-hp, 269-lb-ft 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, eight-speed automatic transmission, and air suspension. Though it may technically just be a mid-cycle refresh, the 2013 1500 feels like an all-new model – almost everything under the skin has been changed in some way. Out on our short drive loop, made up mostly of surface streets and a quick highway jaunt, the V-6-powered Ram drove well. The new Pentastar and eight-speed auto combo is world’s better than the old 3.7-liter V-6 it replaces. It accelerates well, the transmission shifts smartly, and it’s more economical than before, though if we’re honest it could use a bit more oomph for the full-size truck. But then again, that’s what the Hemi is for.

2013 Ram 1500 V 8 front three quarter 225x300 imageSpeaking of the Hemi, I got a chance to drive one of the first 2013 Ram 1500 4×4′s with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and eight-speed automatic combination — and it was just fantastic. This powertrain combination is a real winner; I can’t wait for the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Jeep Grand Cherokee to get this engine and transmission pairing. Already a great transmission when fitted to the Pentastar V-6, the eight-speed just meshes so well with the 395-hp, 407-lb-ft 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Tow and fuel economy figures haven’t been released yet for this engine and transmission pairing, but Ram reps say that its towing capacity shouldn’t change much. Fuel economy, however, will shoot up, matching or beating the two-wheel drive Ford F-150 EcoBoost’s 16/22 mpg city/highway rating.

After my spin in the Hemi- and eight-speed-equipped 1500, I got a chance to poke around the new Rams a bit more. The cabin is much nicer than before with a great mix of higher-quality materials (including real unfinished wood), and thoughtful touches, like turning the column shifter into an easy-to-use knob, putting suspension, tow, and other vehicle settings together, and putting things like the USB and auxiliary input ports into the center console to avoid a spider web of cables over the center stack.

I also got a chance to toy with the air suspension. The Ram’s new air suspension is very similar to that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s in that it includes two off-road settings, an entry-and-exit setting, and an aerodynamic setting. It’s also load-leveling; as the Ram representatives demonstrated, once the suspension senses a load in the bed (in this case three dudes sitting on the tailgate) the truck will wait 30 seconds for the load to stabilize before adjusting the rear suspension and leveling it off. It was a pretty cool trick.

After driving the two trucks I hopped into one of the 2013 Dodge Darts that Chrysler brought to the event. Having already experienced the base 2.0-liter I-4 and six-speed auto combination, I went straight for a Dart with the Fiat 500 Abarth-sourced 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4 and six-speed dual-clutch transmission. As it does in the Abarth, the Dart’s turbo-4 makes 160 hp, though it makes a smidgen more torque. While the little turbocharged engine sounds great (think 500 Abarth-lite) it still felt – well — slow. The dual-clutch didn’t shift quickly, seemed to hang revs, and felt more like a CVT than the fast-shifting tranny it’s supposed to be.

The manual, too, was a bit of a disappointment. Having just driven the 500 Abarth to refresh my memory of how fun that powertrain could be, I was hoping a turbocharged Dart with a manual transmission would be just as good. Unfortunately, it just isn’t. The Dart handles well enough, but that engine just doesn’t feel like it’s enough for the car, and the transmission is a letdown – the shifter has a rubbery feel to it, and the pedals are too widely spaced for heel-toeing. While the interior of the new Dart may be fantastic, the driving experience doesn’t yet live up to its sporty looks.

All in all, it was a pretty informative morning. First impressions go a long way, but I won’t pass final judgment on the Ram or Dart until we have them in for our Car of the Year and Truck of the Year programs. While some vehicles may not have been as fun as others, driving things like the Hemi Ram 1500 gave me a glimpse at what we can expect in the coming year from the Pentastar brand — and overall, the future looks promising.
